A short conversation with Bogdan Zdrojewski

There have been a lot of events around me lately! A lot is happening, I am constantly on the road and at meetings. Also this time, during the trip, there was a special surprise – I had the pleasure of meeting Bogdan Zdrojewski, a fascinating and ambitious person. After such a pleasant conversation, I simply can't help but mention him here too.

Oppositionist and president of Wrocław

Most of you surely remember that it was Bogdan Zdrojewski who was the mayor of Wrocław from 1990 to 2001. However, his adventure with politics began much earlier. He studied philosophy and cultural studies, and even as a student he was a highly committed and rebellious person. During martial law, he headed the secret Independent Students' Association at the University of Wrocław, and in later years he held various positions in the NSZZ "Solidarność". After 1989, he joined the Wrocław authorities, and in 1990 he became the president of this city. During the flood of the millennium, in 1997, President Bogdan Zdrojewski personally took part in managing the flood prevention operation in the city.

Member of Parliament, man of the world

In fact, Bogdan Zdrojewski obtained the position of senator in 1997. However, combining this office with the function of the city's president turned out to be legally impossible. Zdrojewski returned to Wrocław, remaining its president until 2001. Then he held the office of senator, MP, and also Minister of Culture and National Heritage in two governments of Donald Tusk. In the early years of his term, he had to face accusations of mismanagement. However, he waived his immunity in order to take part in a fair trial and was acquitted of these charges. He currently serves as a member of the European Parliament.

Flood 2024

Meeting Bogdan Zdrojewski in such exceptionally difficult circumstances as the flood that the south of our country is struggling with was extremely valuable and instructive. What is particularly striking is the attachment and compassion that MEP Zdrojewski shows to Kłodzko, where he was born, and which is now going through a tragic moment in its history. As an active member of the European Parliament and in constant cooperation with Donald Tusk, Bogdan Zdrojewski counts on financial support from the European Union.

Of course, the meeting on the run and after such difficult and tiring hours of meetings, conferences and discussions on the best ways to combat the effects of the flood, although valuable, leaves one unsatisfied. I sincerely hope for another meeting with Bogdan Zdrojewski, in better circumstances, which would allow me to have a broader conversation with this fascinating man.
