From a student project to a space start-up
Idea, passion, and faith in what you do - the creators of ICEYE have shown that these components have an impact on achieving success. If you also skillfully use the numerous circumstances that stand in the way of every entrepreneur, you can perform cosmic feats - literally!
2012, Aalto University, Finland
Rafał Modrzewski has consistently shown that his ambition reaches high and gives him the energy to act in many different fields. As a student at the Warsaw University of Technology, he carried out various projects (among others, he was a co-founder of the Scientific Society of Multimedia Technologies). He continued his studies at the Finnish Aalto University, where he had a chance to lead a team responsible for data processing in one of the local satellite projects. In 2012, together with Pekka Laurila, Modrzewski began work on ICEYE. Initially, the company was supposed to monitor ice movements. Already in 2015, ICEYE managed to prove that its technology can be used to observe dangerous ice elements. The company obtained EUR 2.4 million in subsidies from the EU in the same year.
2018, ICEYE-X1 satellite, outer space
In 2018, ICEYE took the chance to test its best technology. The ICEYE-X1 satellite has been launched into orbit. It was the first satellite weighing less than 100 kg to be equipped with synthetic radar equipment. ICEYE has once again proved that the company's technology works. At the same time, ICEYE-X1 became the first Finnish commercial satellite.
The project of Rafał Modrzewski and Pekka Lauril is not only a thriving company. It is also, and perhaps above all, an award-winning visionary company. ICEYE is building a commercial constellation of microsatellites with SAR radar. It is the largest project of this type in the world. ICEYE devices have 100 times better cost-effectiveness than previously known equipment. In addition, this technology allows obtaining the most up-to-date and reliable observational data.
2022, Donetsk and Kherson regions, Ukraine
In August 2022, the Serhiy Prytula Foundation established cooperation with ICEYE. According to information the Ukrainian Minister of Defense provided, the contract with ICEYE paid off after only a few days. Acquired radar satellite imaging technology helps recognize Russian military equipment's location. Using the obtained information allowed destroy some of the Russian combat vehicles in the Donetsk and Kherson regions.
ICEYE has many more achievements to its credit. The company's technology makes it possible to obtain information, e.g., about natural disasters, on an unprecedented scale. ICEYE strives to ensure that its technology supports efforts to improve the condition of society and the entire planet.
